Select Grade
Flooring A Grade |
Select Grade or Classic Grade (A Grade)
Selected for its fine figure & consistency of colour. It
displays light grain markings and may contain isolated or
clusters of small live pin knots and a very small amount of
lighter, creamy coloured timber. A truly classic floor.
Usually referred to
as Classic, Select or Prime Grade flooring, this is the highest
quality of timber due to the absence of knots and heavy grain
figuring that will show in the character and rustic grades of
timber. These cuts of timber are more expensive than the other
grades due to the fact that the percentage of the timber cut
from the tree that is likely to match this grade is very low,
likewise the percentage that will match the rustic grade is very
high.
In days gone by the landowner, Laird or Lord of the estate would
have kept these cuts for use solely in "the big house", even
more sought after and therefore more expensive would be quarter
sawn oak boards that show silver figuring characteristic of Oak
flooring, interestingly the only timber used in the House of
Commons is quarter sawn Oak.

Character
Grade Flooring B Grade |
Character Grade or Natural Grade (B Grade)
Carefully selected for those who prefer more variation and
features than shown in the select grade but without the boldness
of a Rustic Grade. This grade contains a scattering of sound
knots, an odd small dark knot and a small colour variation
between boards. A vibrant, rich and colourful floor.
Usually referred to
as Character, or Natural Grade flooring, this grade can be
thought of as the middle grade in terms of quality and will
display a scattering of sound knots. With the exception of the
knots, the board is much clearer and is mostly free from shakes
and other rustic features found in the coarser rustic grades.
Colour is mostly light to mid brown with occasional lighter or
darker hues. Character
Grade floors are carefully selected for those who prefer some
variation and features within the look of the timber. This grade
contains a scattering of knots and other rustic markings and
grain patterns and a colour variation from cream to mid brown
but in less frequency and wide variation than the rustic grade.
A vibrant, colourful floor with character. |

Rustic Grade Flooring |
Rustic Grade ( C Grade )
The most rugged and varied of all the grades with wide colour
variations, wild grain patterns, unlimited knots of all sizes &
colours and other rustic features. A bold country floor produced
in small quantities.
Usually referred to
as Rustic Grade flooring, boards may contain some or all of the
following features:- Knots, cracked knots, burrs, wide colour
variation, heart and some heart shake, occasional cracks and
holes. There are no limits to the size of the features provided
the boards are structurally sound. These floors are for the more
adventurous and for those who wish to have an exciting, almost
wild and rugged looking floor, a truly beautiful display of the
variety shown by this timber a favourite amongst our customers.
Colour is mostly light to mid brown with more variation than the
more expensive grades possibly appearing darker due to the
increase in knots and burr and the wider colour variation than the
character grade. A truly vibrant, colourful floor with an
abundance of character.
